Who was R.D. Lawrence?

Portrait of R.D. LawrenceR.D. Lawrence was a Spanish-born university-trained biologist and World War II veteran who moved to Canada in 1954. He worked as a correspondent for many Canadian newspapers and wrote books about his adventures in the Canadian wilderness. He felt a particular kinship with wild animals and focused a lot of his time with wolves. In the 1980s, R.D. and his wife, Sharon, moved to a 100-acre lot in the Haliburton Highlands where the two of them lived with and rehabilitated animals on their wildlife reserve. He wrote thirty books on distinctively Canadian ecosystems. In 2003, R.D. died of Alzheimer’s Disease, leaving several unfinished manuscripts. Three years later, not wanting to separate her late husband’s collection, Sharon Lawrence donated the collection to the Town of Minden’s Cultural Centre. Now, the memory of R.D. Lawrence’s passion for nature will be embodied in R.D. Lawrence Place, a multi-purpose cultural facility.
